An annual boiler service is essential spending and should be budgeted for along with other repair costs. It will also ensure the boiler is performing safely, efficiently and reliably. Likewise, it is a fundamental requirement of any boiler manufacturer's warranty. Servicing will save you money in the long term by reducing energy costs and likelihood of breakdown.
Safety is clearly paramount and unsafe appliances such as those incorrectly fitted, badly repaired or poorly maintained can produce high amounts of the poisonous gas carbon monoxide.
